The results of the 2025 CAA Worst Roads campaign are in.

This year, Provincial Trunk Highway 34 has taken over the top spot.

Ewald Friesen, manager of government and community relations for CAA Manitoba, says they've seen this road make the list before, but not the number one spot.

"This is the sixth time that this highway has made it to our top ten list, so it's what we would like to call a usual suspect," said Friesen. "The stretch of highway runs between Holland and Gladstone, and you know, we've seen it before, but never in our top in our number one spot.

He says it is a rural road, which is something of a theme that they've been seeing this year with their top ten worst roads.

"As a matter of fact, nine out of ten of our worst roads this year are from rural Manitoba, with only one Winnipeg road making the list at all."

A HISTORIC FIRST FOR THE CAMPAIGN

This marked a historic first for the campaign, being the first time in its 14-year history, that more rural roads made the top 10 list than city streets.

Friesen says he thinks that residents of rural Manitoba are getting the message that the CAA Worst Roads campain is working.

"A good example of this is the turn out that we saw last year in Brandon. Our number one worst road was 18th St. in Brandon and the provincial government moved very quickly in a coordinated way to have our number one worst road fixed," Friesen expalined. "As a matter of fact, the premier stood up in question period, committed to fixing the worst road. A couple months later there was a funding announcement and a few months after that there were shovels in the ground."

Friesen says there was also an uptick this year in the amount of nominations.

"We had 723 different roads nominate, of course, only 10 made the list, but 723 roads nominated from 86 different municipalities. That's an increase of about 50% in the in the number of roads that were nominated this year," said Friesen.

Half of the roads on the list are new this year, including Provincial Road 24 in the Interlake, Provincial Road 349 in Westman, Provincial Road 239 in Interlake, 26th Street in Brandon, and Provincial Trunk Highway 12 in Eastman. Saskatchewan Avenue, the only Winnipeg road on the list in 2025, has appeared on the CAA Worst Roads list for the last seven consecutive years.

"CAA Manitoba urges all levels of government to prioritize road safety through predictable, year-over-year investment and timely repairs," said Friesen. "Bad roads matter. Bad roads are centainly an affordability issue. CAA Manitoba will continue to advocate for Manitobans to drive positive change in communities across the province."
