UPDATE: June 3, 2025

Monday, June 2, 2025, 4:15 p.m. – The Kiskatinaw River wildfire (G70422), burning southwest of Kelly Lake in British Columbia (BC), grew Sunday afternoon, but has not moved any closer to the Alberta border. BC Wildfire Service updated the size of the fire to 3,901 hectares from 3,043 hectares.  

High temperatures and wind are expected to make firefighting efforts challenging; however, proactive planning continues with Alberta Wildfire and the County of Grande Prairie. 

 

UPDATE: June 2, 2025

As of Sunday, June 1, 2025, 2:10 p.m. there have been no significant changes to the Kiskatinaw River wildfire (G70422), burning southwest of Kelly Lake in British Columbia (BC). Alberta Wildfire and the County of Grande Prairie continue to monitor the situation. The fire remains about 7 km from the Alberta border, and the BC Wildfire Service has updated its size to 3,043.9 hectares.

County Regional Fire Service would like to remind the public to stay clear of the area and allow crews to conduct their work. A staffed checkpoint is in place with barricades at the border and RCMP are patrolling the evacuation area.

Wildfire evacuation alert remains in effect

The wildfire evacuation alert issued by the County of Grande Prairie remains in place for residents located north of Township Road 720 to Township Road 732, east of the BC/Alberta border to Range Road 130. No evacuation is required at this time. If an evacuation order is issued, residents will have 30 minutes to evacuate.

There was no significant overnight growth of the out-of-control wildfire burning approximately 7.5 kilometres from the BC/Alberta border. The Evacuation Alert will remain in place.

The estimated 4,590-hectare Kiskatinaw River wildfire remains within BC and is located southwest of Kelly Lake, BC.

The Evacuation Alert remains in effect for County residents located north of Township Road 720 to Township Road 732, east of the British Columbia (BC)/Alberta border to Range Road 130. No evacuation is required at this time. If an Evacuation Order is issued, residents will have 30 minutes to evacuate.

The BC Wildfire Service continues to respond with firefighters, helicopters, air tankers, and heavy equipment.

The County Regional Fire Service continues to monitor fire behaviour and provided sprinkler protection to six homes last night. The County has a helicopter on standby, increased staffing at all stations, and is supporting the BC Wildfire Service and Alberta Wildfire as the lead agencies responding to the wildfire.

How to prepare for an evacuation:

  • Fuel vehicles and gather pets, important documents, medications, medical devices, and enough food and water to be away from home for at least 7 days.
  • Watch for updated evacuation alerts for new instructions as the situation progresses.
  • Review details on preparing for wildfires and evacuations at www.alberta.ca/beprepared.  

County residents from the evacuation order area who are registered with the County’s Livestock Emergency Response Plan (LERP) have been contacted by the County Agriculture department. Residents from the evacuation order area who have not registered their livestock with LERP should call 780-532-9727.

The Dawson Creek Emergency Reception Centre will open today, Friday, May 30, 2025 from 10:00hrs to 14:00hrs. The Dawson Creek Emergency Support Services (ESS) team is on site to assist with:

  • Food
  • Lodging
  • Supplies
