April was another strong month for construction in Steinbach, with over $13 million worth of building permits issued.

City Council reviewed the monthly report at the last council meeting in May, showing a combined total of $13.1 million in new residential and commercial construction.

Deputy Mayor Michael Zwaagstra said April was a very strong month.

“Just over $7,000,000 in residential and nearly $6 million in commercial. And the total puts it just over $13 million for the month,” Zwaagstra pointed out. “A significant number of new dwelling units, 45 multifamily, and 5 single family. It's good to see this growth happening in Steinbach and so far this year, we are up to $38 million total when you add up residential, commercial, industrial, schools and churches. So definitely a good year so far. Looking forward to seeing what happens in the next part of the year.”

The report included permits issued for three residential buildings under construction on McKenzie Avenue which will each contain 15 units.

Mayor Earl Funk also highlighted another notable detail in the report: nearly 120,000 square feet of new commercial space was approved in April alone.

“That is significant for any month, especially a month like April,” said Funk. “We're just really excited with where we're going — and council, there is more to come.”
