The Government of Saskatchewan has officially proclaimed June as Parks and Recreation Month, honouring the vital role community park spaces and recreation professionals play in promoting healthier, more connected communities across the province.
“Recreation areas and activities are at the heart of our communities and easily accessible to everyone,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Alana Ross said in a release Tuesday. “They provide social connections and activities that are essential for our physical and mental health, improve our wellbeing and help us live longer, healthier lives.”
The initiative, led in partnership with the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA), is themed “Connect on Common Ground.” The campaign encourages residents to embrace the inclusiveness and diversity of the province’s outdoor spaces.
“Parks and outdoor recreation environments in Saskatchewan are as diverse as the people who enjoy them,” said SPRA president Darcy McLeod. “Everyone belongs in parks and recreation.”
The SPRA is a provincial non-profit dedicated to connecting, educating and inspiring recreation and park providers. It encourages residents to take full advantage of the benefits offered by parks and recreational activities throughout June.
Sask Lotteries, a key funder of the province’s parks and recreation delivery system, supports over 12,000 sport, culture and recreation groups in Saskatchewan. Proceeds from lottery sales help provide thousands of recreational opportunities across communities.
