KINDERSLEY, Sask. – A fire ban is now in effect for the Town of Kindersley as hot, dry conditions continue to increase the risk of wildfires across the province.

The ban, declared by Fire Chief Jeff Soveran and authorized by Chief Administrative Officer Audrey Hebert, took effect June 4 and applies to all public and private lands within town limits.

The ban prohibits all open-air fires, chimineas, propane or natural gas-fueled fire pits, fire tables, fire bowls, fire rings and outdoor fireplaces. It also includes candles, torches, citronella candles, tiki torches, flame-lit incense burners and essential oil burners.

Solid fuel barbecues, grills and similar outdoor cooking appliances are also banned. However, propane or natural gas appliances equipped with a shut-off valve are still permitted for cooking purposes.

“This is the next logical step,” said Soveran. “The RM of Kindersley issued their fire ban about two weeks ago. With everything happening up north and the lack of rainfall here, it’s important to be proactive and reduce any risk of fire.”

Soveran added that enforcement will be carried out as needed. In most cases, violations may be met with education and warnings, but fines and further action under municipal bylaws are possible if necessary.

“This ban is about prevention,” said Soveran. “Most people understand the seriousness of the situation and are willing to do their part to avoid a possible emergency.”

The fire ban will remain in place until conditions improve and it is officially rescinded by the town.
