The City of Grande Prairie is hosting two upcoming Candidate Information Sessions on June 24 and August 20 to support residents interested in running for municipal office in the 2025 Municipal Election.
Facilitated by members of City Administration the sessions offer prospective candidates information on the structure, time commitment and operations of City Council. Each session includes a brief presentation followed by a Q&A period, allowing attendees to ask questions, explore key topics in more detail, and gain deeper insight into municipal structure and operations.
Session one: Introduction to Municipal Governance
The first information session takes place on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Grande Prairie Museum & Heritage Village. This session provides an overview of the role as a member of City Council.
Attendees will learn about municipal election legislation, key dates in the election process, the structure and responsibilities of local government, the role of a councillor and the time commitment involved.
This in-person event is ideal for individuals considering candidacy or exploring the idea of running for municipal office.
Session two: Introduction to Municipal Budgeting
Introduction to Municipal Budgeting takes place on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The second session focuses on municipal financial decision-making.
It will introduce attendees to the budget development and approval process, outline the role of elected officials in budget deliberations and provide an overview of the City of Grande Prairie’s current budget framework.
This session is intended to help prospective candidates build a foundational understanding of municipal finance.
Both sessions are free to attend; however, pre-registration is required to support effective planning.
