Strathmore seniors got to celebrate Seniors' Week with ice cream and live music at the Lord of All Lutheran Church.
On Thursday (June 5) seniors met at the church, with the social put together by Wheatland Family & Community Support Services.
"When it first started, we were lucky to get two tables full," said Ethel Bertram, a local senior. "Just before the lockdowns, there were starting to be a few more. We'd get 30 or 40 people. Since they started up again, we're getting 80 to 90 people. It's usually full."
Residents were given popcorn, ice cream, soda pop, and other snacks as they sat in the church and enjoyed each other's company.
"Seeing people that you don't see is my favourite part. A lot of them have changed, and they'd probably say the same about me," added Bertram. "When you don't see somebody at our age, we usually have extra stuff with us that we didn't before."
As for what Seniors' Week means to her, Bertram mentioned one third of Strathmore's population being over the age of 65, and the need for more handicap-accessible buildings in town.
There were several other events going on in Strathmore for Seniors' Week, including a live music performance at The Vault Cultural Collective, and a Carnival Day at Wheatland Lodge.
