Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) have issued a Special Air Quality Statement for Wheatland County, including Strathmore, Lyalta, and Carseland.

The alert was released on Saturday (June 7), with the poor air quality caused by wildfire smoke.

"Air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour," wrote ECCC on its website. "As smoke levels increase, health risks increase."

According to the organization, you may experience eye irritation, headaches, wheezing chest pains, or a severe cough. ECCC recommends you limit time outdoors and reschedule outdoor activities.

"When indoors, keep windows and doors closed as much as possible. When there is an extreme heat event occurring with poor air quality, prioritize keeping cool," added ECCC.

"Protect your indoor air from wildfire smoke. Actions can include using a clean, good quality air filter in your ventilation system and/or a certified portable air cleaner that can filter fine particles."

The group also asks that residents check in on others who live nearby and may be likely to be impacted by air pollution.
