After weeks of dry, smoky conditions and extreme fire risk, southeastern Manitoba got some rain on Saturday — and there’s more on the way today.

Rainfall totals from Manitoba Agriculture show much of the southeast picked up between 6 and 11 millimetres. While not enough to extinguish ongoing wildfires or significantly alter fire risk, the moisture is still a welcome sight for residents, farmers, and firefighters alike.

Rain totals around the region

Here’s how much rain fell in several southeast communities on Saturday:

  • Steinbach – 10.5 mm

  • Marchand – 10.3 mm

  • Richer – 10.2 mm

  • St. Labre – 9.3 mm

  • Beausejour – 8.5 mm

  • Dugald – 7.4 mm

  • Zhoda – 7.3 mm

  • St. Pierre – 6.7 mm

  • Rosa – 6.7 mm

  • Gardenton – 6.6 mm

  • St. Adolphe – 6.2 mm

  • Lac du Bonnet – 6.1 mm

Although the amounts are modest, any precipitation is helpful given the province’s ongoing state of emergency due to wildfires.

Gusty winds accompanied the rain

Along with the showers came powerful winds. The highest wind gust in the Eastern region was recorded in Dugald at 98 km/h. St. Adolphe also saw strong gusts at 82 km/h, while Steinbach recorded wind speeds of up to 54 km/h.

More rain today, then clearing skies

Environment Canada says the region can expect more showers today with a risk of thunderstorms later this afternoon and evening. Widespread smoke will return by late afternoon. Today's high is expected to reach 15°C.

Tonight, showers will continue along with smoky conditions and a northwest wind gusting up to 40 km/h. The low will dip to 10°C.

Tomorrow (Monday) brings a few more showers in the morning before skies begin to clear. Smoky conditions and breezy northwest winds will persist, with a high of 18°C.

By Tuesday, southeast Manitoba is expected to see sunshine and warmer temperatures with a high near 26°C.
