The Steinbach Landfill is hosting another Oil Recycling Day on Wednesday, June 11.

Head of Solid Waste for the city, Eldon Wallman, says it’s the only day of the year they give coupons for free oil in exchange for used oil.

Wallman says, “Bringing your used oil to the landfill is important, obviously from an environmental standpoint. It’s the right thing to do.”

“Residents of Manitoba are awesome at oil recycling. We ranked very, very high across Canada when it comes to oil recycling, and not just the oil, but the containers that they come in, which is a huge return that goes back into the oil recycling depots.”

Wallman notes, “People may not realize it, but oil can be recycled from their lawn mower, car, or combine. Whatever. Even farmers bring in their stuff.”

He adds that many people collect their used oil and oil containers just so they can bring them to the depot on Oil Recycling Day.

“So, do this year-round, every day. It's just on Wednesday, we kind of make a promotion out of it, and we give away some new oil, plus when you come to the landfill, you can have a hot dog and a drink for a toonie. One of Earl's good European wieners.”

Wallman says their staff is trying to make it a fun day. “And we collect an awful lot of stuff in one day from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. That's there's a lot of litres that come through.”

Some people have even turned it into a tradition, Wallman says. “They bring their kids, and then stay and enjoy a hot dog and drink.”

Oil Recycling Day is open to all residents of southeastern Manitoba.

Wallman says that in the past, they have collected about 12,000 litres of oil, and they hope for that again on Wednesday.
