KINDERSLEY, Sask. — As Filipino Heritage Month unfolds across Canada, West Central Saskatchewan is highlighting a vibrant community that continues to grow and thrive at the heart of the region.
The Filipino-Canadian community has become the fastest-growing ethnic group in West Central Saskatchewan, with its presence deeply woven into local life through health care, small businesses, schools and culture. In Kindersley, Rosetown and surrounding towns, Filipino families are not just settling in — they’re helping shape the future.
This year’s celebrations come with mixed emotions. While June is a time of reflection and pride for the nearly one million Filipino-Canadians across the country, grief still lingers following the tragic attack at Vancouver’s Lapu-Lapu Festival in April, which claimed 11 lives. The Government of Canada issued a national statement this week, acknowledging the sorrow while reaffirming the country’s support and admiration for Filipino-Canadians’ resilience, unity and enduring contributions.
From coast to coast, the community is being recognized for its values — hard work, compassion and the spirit of Bayanihan, or communal unity — passed down through generations. These values are especially visible in Saskatchewan’s heartland, where Filipino residents are becoming leaders in health care, innovators in small business, and vibrant contributors to local culture.
Kindersley will host the 2nd Annual Filipino Music & Street Food Festival on July 5 and 6, transforming downtown into a celebration of Filipino heritage. The weekend will feature live music, traditional dances, street food, games, cultural displays and crafts.
“Kindersley made history last year,” organizers said in a release. “We’re back and better than ever — with even more music, food and energy.”
Residents and visitors will be able to experience traditional Filipino cuisine, hear the stories behind the culture, and watch local performers bring their roots to life. Organizers say the event will also offer volunteer opportunities and a chance for sponsors to help grow the celebration.
Local officials say the community’s contributions are being felt across Kindersley.
“The Town of Kindersley proudly supports Filipino Heritage Month, recognizing the significant contributions of the Filipino community to our municipality and the nation,” said Mayor Ken Francis.
As Filipino Heritage Month continues, both local leaders and federal officials are encouraging Canadians to learn more about the culture, language and traditions that are enriching the country.
“You are not just building successful lives — you are building bridges of understanding and enriching the multicultural fabric of a great nation,” reads part of the statement from Ottawa. “May you continue to strengthen your community and showcase the very best of the Filipino spirit.”
