Green Valley School (GVS) is buzzing with excitement, as dozens of students prepare to graduate.
Principal Angela Burtnack-Schinkel says 40 students will be turning their tassels this year. While it's a smaller graduating class than usual, she says it’s no less significant.
"These kids have set out and done some really remarkable things," she says, describing them as a class of enthusiasm, passion, and care. "They are a small group, but they are mighty."
Luke Giesbrecht has been named valedictorian for the class of 2025.
He says his time at GVS has been filled with special memories, from the dedication of teachers to the strong sense of community among students.
"I've always really recognized how reliable and present everyone is. If you ever need help with something or just want someone to talk to, you'll always find someone around that is willing or eager to help out," he says. "There's always someone like, 'Yep, I can do it. I'll be there.'"
As students prepare for the next chapter, Giesbrecht encourages his classmates to take risks and lean on the support around them.
"Step out and know that you have people that will have your back and be there in case you mess up. Because we're going to mess up at some point—but just go for it," Giesbrecht says.
Burtnack-Schinkel echoes that message and urges grads to stay connected after they leave, noting many GVS alumni have gone on to achieve great things and this group will be no different.
"We're very sad to see this group go. But on the other hand, we know that they are so ready to make a difference in this world," she says.
When it comes to his path forward, Giesbrecht plans to go to Providence University College and study human anatomy, followed by paramedicine at Red River College.
GVS' graduation is at 3:30 p.m. on June 25 at the Emmanuel Evangelical Free Church in Steinbach.
