The City of Dawson Creek is letting residents know that heavy rain is expected in the next few days. While the rain is helpful due to the recent dry weather, it could also lead to flooding in some areas, especially low-lying spots. City crews are keeping a close eye on the situation and getting things ready in case there is a lot of water runoff. Residents are encouraged to take steps to protect their property as well.

How to Prepare

Protect your home:

  • Check gutters, downspouts, and storm drains for debris and clear them to ensure proper drainage.
  • Move valuables and important documents to higher ground or into waterproof containers.
  • Review and understand your insurance coverage.
  • Use sandbags around basement doors and ground-level windows if you live in a flood-prone area.
    • Free sandbags are available at the City Yard Waste Collection Site at 949 99 Avenue - bring a shovel.
    • Check your sump pump to ensure it is working properly.

Be ready:

  • Prepare a household emergency kit or “Go Bag” with essentials like medications, ID, flashlights, chargers, snacks and water.
  • Register for the BC Services App.

Ongoing Level 4 Drought

Even though rain is on the way, Dawson Creek and the surrounding area are still facing a Level 4 Drought — one of the most serious drought levels in B.C. The long stretch of dry weather has made the ground hard and plants dry, which means the land can’t soak up water as well. As a result, there’s a higher chance of flooding when the rain arrives.

When the ground is hard and dry, rainwater runs off quickly instead of soaking in. This can lead to flash flooding, erosion, and put pressure on city drainage systems. A single rainfall won’t end a drought, but it can still cause serious problems if communities aren’t ready for it.

The City is encouraging everyone to take steps to protect their homes, look out for their neighbours, and stay aware of any changes in the weather.
