Mitchell Middle School (MMS) is asking parents to review safety precautions with their children following a concerning incident reported Thursday evening.

In a letter shared with families and posted on the school’s website, administration says a student was walking home after school when an unknown man allegedly approached and asked them to have sex with him.

RCMP say the encounter involved a 10-year-old girl and a man, believed to be between 40 and 50 years old, on Oakview Avenue in Mitchell.

The student ignored the man, who then left, police say.

The man is described as having a long, chest-length black beard, wearing a dark blue turban, and driving a newer black four-door Honda or Hyundai car.

Police say patrols were made by officers in the area, but the vehicle was not located.

The investigation is ongoing, and no further reports have been made.

In the letter, the school encourages families to review basic safety measures with their children, including:

  • Never getting into the car of a stranger.
  • Contacting a trusted adult if they feel threatened for any reason.
  • Being aware of their surroundings and cautious if a stranger approaches them.
  • Walking in groups when possible, and sticking to well-lit areas.

Teachers will also be reviewing these safety reminders with students on Friday, the school says.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we will expand our supervision before and after school for the next few days as well," the letter reads.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Steinbach RCMP at 204-326-4452.
