It looks like the only umbrellas needed this weekend for Summer in the City in Steinbach will be the ones used to shield the sun.
That is according to Crawford Luke, meteorologist with Environment Canada. Luke says they are forecasting a mild weekend, with a lot of sunshine.
The current forecast calls for the opening day of the festival to be mainly sunny, with a high of 24 degrees. Saturday will then see a mix of sun and cloud, with a high of 22 degrees. Luke says Sunday should be the hottest day of the weekend, with temperatures climbing to 28 degrees. The normal high for this time of year is 23 degrees.
Luke encourages festivalgoers this weekend to use sun protection, wear a hat and to stay hydrated.
"It looks like a great weekend," he says. "I hope the festival goes well for you guys."
And while there is currently no rain in the forecast for Summer in the City, Luke says we should never count it out.
"Never say never," he says. "I would say if there was going to be any chance it's probably going to be Sunday evening."
However, he says even for Sunday night, the chance of rain is low. Luke says the greatest chance for rain in the coming days is Monday.
"Especially Monday night, it looks like we might get into some showers, maybe a thunderstorm," he says. "But again, it doesn't look like a very organized system, so it's a little tricky to kind of pinpoint details at this point."
Luke says there is also a chance of rain on Tuesday but nothing substantial.
"It doesn't look like any organized system or anything," he says. "And then potentially later on next week there might be a few other chances for showers or thunderstorms. But no substantial rainfall it looks like on the horizon right now."
Luke says the one concern for this weekend could be air quality. Smoke from wildfires has resulted in a moderate risk to air quality. He says a moderate risk is already an improvement from what it has been in recent days. And, he says air quality should continue to improve, with the sky becoming less hazy in the coming days.
"It's going to continue improving throughout the weekend it looks like," he adds.
Meanwhile, Luke says Sunday's high of 28 degrees is not necessarily a trend towards hotter weather. Monday's high of 25 degrees is a return to temperatures that are closer to normal. He notes the long-range forecast next week calls for mild weather, but not necessarily overly hot.
"Kind of mid-to-high 20s," he says. "But maybe not quite hitting 30 or anything like that just yet."
