According to the City of Calgary and Calgary Police Service, several closures and restrictions remain till June 18 to ensure the safe arrival and departure of international delegates.
Airport Trail tunnel closed until June 18
The Airport Tunnel on Airport Trail N.E. is closed and will remain inaccessible through Wednesday, June 18.
The off-ramp from northbound 19 Street N.E. to eastbound Airport Trail N.E. is also closed during this period.
The City of Calgary states that Airport Trail N.E. remains open between Deerfoot Trail N.E. and Barlow Trail N.E., but the tunnel itself is not accessible.
Travellers heading to the airport from the east side of Calgary are advised to detour via Country Hills Boulevard N.E. to Barlow Trail N.E.
Lane closures near G7 accommodations
Road closures are also in effect near the Fairmont Palliser hotel, where delegates are expected to be present.
The City of Calgary says these closures began Sunday, June 15, and will remain in place through end of day Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
The affected areas include:
-
The Fairmont parking lane and the right traffic lane on eastbound 9th Avenue S.W.
-
The right lane on northbound 1st Street S.W.
Airport perimeter parking ban and McCall Way restriction
From June 14 to 18, no stopping or parking is allowed around the Calgary airport perimeter, according to the City of Calgary.
The north end of McCall Way is restricted to employee and business traffic only, with a security checkpoint in effect.
Motorcade delays expected throughout the week
The Calgary Police Service confirms that rolling closures may occur as delegates are moved in and out of the airport through official motorcades.
“Other temporary closures or stoppages may be in effect,” officials state. “We ask all motorists to please follow officer directions.”
Highwood Pass closed to vehicles, limited access for cyclists and pedestrians
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Highwood Pass/Highway 40 South is fully closed to all vehicle traffic and will remain shut down until it reopens on June 21.
Cyclists and pedestrians will not be able to access Highwood Pass from the north until June 20. Access from the south remains open, but cyclists will be turned around at the summit, just north of the Ptarmigan Cirque parking lot.
The RCMP states there is an increased security presence on the road, with signage indicating the locations of closure points.
Parking ban on Highway 40 during summit
A parking ban of all motorized vehicles is in effect along Highway 40 from the intersection of Highway 1 to the north winter closure gate at the junction of the Kananaskis Lakes Trail. The restriction runs from June 14 to 18, coinciding with the G7 Leaders’ Summit.
Further details have been published in an official RCMP news release.
In a joint statement, the Integrated Safety and Security Group (ISSG) thanked “motorists, cyclists and hikers in the local communities for their patience and support in maintaining a safe and secure environment for all.”
The ISSG said it “continues to work closely with local authorities and Alberta Parks to help residents and visitors navigate the area safely.”
