Recently, the southeast played host to a proactive traffic safety initiative put on by the Saskatchewan RCMP. On June 6, Officers from the Carnduff and Estevan detachments, Saskatchewan RCMP’s Combined Traffic Services in Estevan, and conservation officers with the Provincial Protective Services Branch conducted check stops in the Moose Creek Regional Park, Oxbow, and Frobisher areas.
The work was a part of SGI’s Enforcement Overdrive program, which aims to decrease impaired driving across Saskatchewan.
“Whether it be texting and driving, speeding, or driving impaired – we all know these behaviours are a risk to ourselves and others on the road. The problem is, despite knowing that, people continue to partake in these dangerous activities while behind the wheel,” said Carnduff RCMP Sgt. Michel Chateauneuf. “It’s your friends, family, neighbours, coworkers, and community members that you share the road with – do your part is making sure everyone gets to their destination safely this summer.”
As those check stops progressed, officers were on the lookout for unsafe driving behaviours, including impairment by drugs and alcohol. Officers stopped around 300 vehicles and performed around 186 Mandatory Alcohol Screening tests.
Over the initiative, these officers issued 35 tickets, including four for speeding and two for using a handheld communications device while driving. They also issued 12 warnings.
Three roadside suspensions were also issued following officers finding drivers who had recently consumed alcohol. Along with those suspensions was the three-day seizure of a motorhome after officers determined the driver had recently consumed alcohol.
