June in Saskatchewan is known for warmth and thunderstorms. So far this month, however, there has been little in the way of thunderstorms in the southeast corner.

Other parts of the province have been getting thunderstorms in recent days. This includes thunderstorms in the central part of the province on Friday and Saturday, both of which spawned tornadoes.

“Friday night, we actually did have a tornado occur near Coleville, Saskatchewan, and this would have happened around 6 o’clock in the evening,” said Crawford Luke, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. “And the Saturday, we had another round of thunderstorms, kind of more in the central part around Saskatoon, and we did get another tornado confirmed from a storm near Hepburn.”

Both of the tornadoes on the weekend were classified as EF0. Luke explained this is due to not knowing of any damage the storms may have caused. The tornadoes themselves, though, were confirmed through eyewitnesses with videos and photos.

The south wasn’t completely untouched when it came to thunderstorms over the weekend. Sunday afternoon and into the evening, a system passed south of Weyburn.

“It definitely looked like a pretty intense thunderstorm, and it looked like it probably would have had some hail with it,” Luke shared. He added they welcome any reports from people who were in the area, such as Gladmar, Lake Alma, and Big Beaver.

With the start of some unstable air moving through the province, it does increase the likelihood of a thunderstorm in the southeast this week, but it isn’t a guarantee one will blow through. It will start with cloudy conditions expected on Monday, with the possibility of thunderstorms, and from there, the instability is expected to linger around right through the weekend.

“Tuesday looks like the best bet at a sunny day, and then Wednesday it looks like we could get into maybe showers or thunderstorms,” Luke said. “Then, likely a repeat for Thursday – another chance of showers and thunderstorms, and then looking further ahead to next weekend, right now it’s looking like it’ll be on the wet side as well.”
