Altona police are investigating after someone in Plum Coulee had their firearm stolen on Sunday.

"It's still preliminary, but the vehicle was parked at a residence, the firearm had been left in the backseat of a pickup truck. It was covered and there was a trigger lock, but it had been left unattended in the back of the vehicle and the owner noticed it was gone when he returned," explained Police Chief Dan Defer.

Not only are police investigating the theft of the firearm, but also how it was stored.

Defer noted, there are strict requirements for the transportation and storage of firearms in vehicles.

"Because it's a pickup truck, obviously he's not going to be storing it in the trunk," explained Defer. "Transporting this firearm, it can be taken from a legal place of where the owner possesses it to a designated place like a range or, if it's hunting, for hunting purposes, and then upon return, back to the residence. You shouldn't be storing the firearm in your vehicle; you should be removing it. It has to be trigger locked at all times."
