Saskatchewan is leading the country in urban housing start growth, with new figures from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation showing a 108.6 per cent increase in the first five months of 2025 compared to the same period last year.

The province ranked first in the nation for growth in housing starts during that period.

“Saskatchewan's economy continues to show positive momentum and investor confidence,” Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding said in a statement. “More homes are being built, and more people are living and working across the province than ever before.”

The month of May alone saw a year-over-year increase of 205.9 per cent in urban housing starts, placing Saskatchewan second among provinces for monthly growth.

Single-family home starts were up 63.7 per cent in May compared to the same month in 2024, while multi-unit residential construction surged by 617.9 per cent.

Housing starts refer to the number of new residential construction projects that begin in a given period.

The strong growth in housing construction is reflected in broader economic trends. According to Statistics Canada, Saskatchewan’s real GDP reached a record $80.5 billion in 2024, an increase of $2.6 billion, or 3.4 per cent. That places the province second in the country for real GDP growth and well above the national average of 1.6 per cent.

Private capital investment also rose significantly, growing by 17.3 per cent to $14.7 billion in 2024, the highest increase among provinces. Investment is projected to climb to $16.2 billion in 2025, up 10.1 per cent from last year, which would be the second highest increase in Canada.
