When Heather and Randy Unger began working with Henry and Margaret Unger in 1989, they were stepping into a family business with deep roots. Originally launched as Margaret Draperies in 1974 in Plum Coulee, the business evolved into Advance Blinds and Drapery and built a reputation for high-quality products and service across Manitoba and into Ontario’s cottage country surrounding Lake of the Woods.

"We enjoyed it. It was fun," Heather says of their more than three decades at the helm. "It was a great business. Henry and Margaret had a really good reputation and had produced a very good product. We just carried that forward."

From its beginnings in drapery design, the company has embraced technological advancements while maintaining its traditional craftsmanship. Heather notes that having their own in-house workroom has become a rarity in the industry, making their offerings all the more unique.

Passing the torch to a familiar face

In January 2025, the Ungers passed the torch to Jeremy Kuhl, a Winkler native who had grown up alongside the Ungers' sons. Kuhl brings a strong work ethic and a keen eye for design to the business, along with a background as a power line technician and training in electronic and network technology.

"Jeremy has made it easy," says Heather. "He's caught on very quickly, and he has excellent taste in design."

For Kuhl, the decision to purchase the business came down to trust and admiration. "Their customers trust them and love them. Their service is unmatched," he says. "It was a little scary making the change, but it's been great."

Honouring the past, embracing the future

Advance Blinds and Drapery remains very much a family operation. Blaine Unger, Heather and Randy's son, continues to play a vital role in the business, particularly in the growing area of motorized and app-controlled window treatments.

"Technology has really become a part of our industry," Heather explains. "You can talk to your blinds now, program them, and do all sorts of fun things."

Kuhl is embracing the learning curve with enthusiasm. "We get to work with some great designers and see a lot of really cool homes. It's been fun learning how blinds fit into a room and add to the design," he says.

Continuing a tradition of customer care

While the ownership may have changed, the values at Advance Blinds and Drapery remain the same. "Customer service is so important," says Kuhl. "People always remember how they were treated."

The business continues to offer a wide range of products, including custom draperies, Hunter Douglas blinds, and blackout options like the Duette with LightLock for total light control. Kuhl and his wife, Sarah, have completed extensive training through Hunter Douglas to ensure continuity in quality and service.

And Heather and Randy aren't going far. "We're not running away. We're here as long as Jeremy needs us," Heather says.
