Cochrane could see as much as 80 millimetres of rain before the weekend is over.

A rainfall warning is in effect for Rocky View County near Cochrane, with heavy rain expected to bring between 40 and 80 millimetres by Saturday evening.

Scattered showers today are forecast to develop into more intense rainfall tonight, continuing through much of Saturday before easing by the evening.

Environment Canada is warning that heavy downpours could lead to flash flooding and water pooling on roads. Low-lying areas may also be at risk of localized flooding.

Drivers are urged to turn on headlights in reduced visibility, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and watch for potential washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts.

Meantime, the Town of Cochrane is warning residents about Trap Lows with the heavy rain expected.

"Trap lows are a part of the stormwater storage system, allowing water to pool on roads, lanes and in greenspaces." according to the Town.

"It may appear that the street is flooding up to and, sometimes, including some of your driveway or lawn. It is not. Trap lows are designed to hold the water on the street and the area is graded to keep the water away from foundations."

Water should drain within 24 hours after the rain ends. If it doesn’t, residents are asked to contact Cochrane Operations at 403-851-2590.
