Grade 7s and 8s from all HSD schools gathered for Soccer Day in Steinbach's’ Soccer Park.
Some families gathered on the sidelines to support their kids and enjoy the cool weather.
One gym teacher and organizer, Trevor Paton, says that this is an amazing way for people access sports without the worry of scheduling after school programming.
“I love seeing every school represented and everyone brings their grade sevens and eights, all their boys and girls, and everyone gets a chance to play.”
Soccer is the perfect game to gather for, as teams compete in tournaments all day long.
“I love seeing kids active. My job is to get kids moving and this is something that they can play for a long time.”
Teams were created through separating kids into boys’ and girls' teams for each grade. This created four teams per school.
Peton notes that seeing kids inspired to join a team is a great motivator for events like these.
“One of my greatest rewarding things about this is seeing kids playing adult soccer after this or that this is something that spurs them on to join a team.”
The kids competed against each other on 4 fields as they wind up the school year with a day of sports, music, and cheering.
