It's an exciting for the 58 students graduating from Morris School today.

Among the group is co-valedictorians Nic Leflar and Kathryn Friesen, who both say they are excited for graduation and ready for the next chapter.

For Nic, that means playing volleyball at CMU while studying to become an engineer.

"I've always had a knack for math and science and, that's kind of what an engineer does - all math and physics. I like building things, so I believe it is the right career."

Kathryn was enrolled in the school's Welding program through the RRTVA and plans to keep on that path by eventually becoming a welding instructor.

"I'm going to start working and, eventually, go to school for that once I get enough experience," she said.

Cherished memories

Both Nic and Kathryn came to Morris School from smaller schools in other communities.

While Nic doesn't have a particular memory that stands out for him, he did say he will forever remember his first teacher upon arriving in Morris, Mrs. Pal. Nic added, he's also made a lot of good friends over the years.

For Kathryn, a favourite memory was pulling a prank on her teacher, Mr. Cox.

"He does like the animated character Buzz Lightyear. So, we printed out 144 and stuck them all over his classroom - in books and drawers, and I think there's even one in the ceiling."

Leflar was recognized with a few awards at the school's graduation ceremony.

Earning the Morris Graduate Athletic Award, Nic led and participated in the following teams: Volleyball, Basketball, and Badminton. During these sports, Nic was recognized by opponents, coaches, and officials for his strong leadership and determination.

He was recently recognized as a Manitoba High School Athletic Scholar Athlete by the Manitoba High School Athletic Association.

As a result, he was presented $1,000 Big Way Citizenship in recognition of his commitment to the school and community, the EBC $400 award and, a $2,000 CMU academic entrance award, the CMU $6,000 Science Merit Award, and the CMU Indigenous Student Award worth $2,500. He also received the $1,000 Miller Environmental Scholarship

Friesen was also presented with a few awards.

She earned the VTAM - Vocational Teachers Association of Manitoba Award for excellence in a vocational program, the Morris Maverick Co-Curricular award in recognition of her involvement and contribution to the school, a Valedictorian plaque and the Town of Morris Technical Training award worth $500.
