Due to the weekend rain, the National Indigenous Peoples Day event had a last-minute change in venue.

The event, which would have been held at Kinsmen Park, was moved to the Strathmore Civic Centre on Saturday (June 21).

The event featured traditional stew and bannock for residents to taste while learning more about Indigenous culture in Canada.

"I'm really proud of this, because I'm Métis myself," said Tiffany Carlson, special projects coordinator with Strathmore Family and Community Support Services (FCSS). "We had our Elder do our blessings. We had some tipi teachings where everyone could ask questions."

The event also featured traditional Indigenous games before ending with several dances.

"I think it's a great opportunity to educate the young people in the community about First Nations, Métis, and Inuit, because a lot of Canadians might not know our histories, and this way we can build that bridge," added Carlson.

The event has been a yearly staple of Strathmore, being first organized in 2019.
