It looked like a scene straight out of a horror film and, despite the graphic result, a three-vehicle incident north of Altona on Wednesday afternoon ended with no injuries.
The chain reaction all started when a school bus heading north on Highway 30 slowed to turn right onto PR 201, explained Greg Zimmerman, Chief for Altona/Rhineland Emergency Services (ARES).
A truck carrying offal, the entrails and internal organs of an animal, was following behind and moved slightly around the left side to pass as the bus was about to make the turn. That is when Zimmerman says a third vehicle, heading west on PR 201 towards the intersection with Highway 30, blew through the stop sign and turned in front of the truck. The driver of the truck was forced to brake suddenly and, while they managed to avoid hitting the car, the sudden stop dislodged the truck's cargo - sending it spilling over the edge of the trailer and on to the car.
Zimmerman says the weight of the entrails was so much that it broke through the car's windshield and spilled into the interior, covering the driver, who did escape without injury.
A nearby business owner quickly arrived to scrape the offal off the road with a loader while fire fighters hosed off the highway.
