Strathmore is getting a new mural in the heart of the downtown core.
Earlier this week, Prospect Human Services' staff and clients began work on a mural outside the King Eddy Pub at the intersection of Lakeside Boulevard and Second Avenue.
The work was being headlined by Shantelle Vermeylen, who has also helped to paint several other murals across Strathmore.
"We've done one at the library, we did one at Mike's Bar & Grill, so we're kind of well known," said Vermeylen.
This mural features several aspects of historic Strathmore, including a Canadian Pacific train and the original King Edward Hotel, which was located across the street from the current King Eddy location.
"Passersby always ask us about it or comment on it. It's a really cool way to make people feel connected to the community," added Vermeylen. "The clients that participate will walk by years from now and know that they painted it."
The mural is done as part of Prospect Human Services' Pathways to Success program, which serves to support those who are looking to build employment skills.
"It's an art-based program where we teach things like problem solving, adaptability, and teamwork through art."
The group is planning to work on the mural for the next two weeks.
Prospect is looking for more clients to help in their next cohort. Anyone interested can reach out to the group through its website.
