The Calgary Flames may have stolen a few fans from oil country over the weekend with the selection of Macklin native Cole Reschny.

Reschny was selected by the Flames with the #18 pick in Friday's NHL Entry Draft in Los Angeles. Known for his crafty offensive skillset, Reschny immediately becomes a top prospect for the Flames and will likely join the team for rookie camp later this fall.

Reschny is no stranger to being a high pick after being drafted #3 overall by the Victoria Royals in 2022, where he met the expectations with 152 points in 127 regular season games. Upping his game even more in the playoffs this year, Reschny collected 25 points in 11 games as his Royals took a second-round exit against the Spokane Chiefs.

Reschny won't be returning to Victoria next season, rather joining the growing list of junior age talent crossing the border to play NCAA Division I hockey instead of playing their career out in the CHL. The Macklin born skater committed to the University of North Dakota following the end of his WHL season where he will continue to grow his game and seek a national championship.

Back during the 2019-2020 season with the U13 AA West Central Wheat Kings Reschny raced onto the scene with 100 points (45 goals, 55 assists) in 24 games, later taking his talents to the CSSHL ranks with Northern Alberta U15 Prep.

After being drafted by Victoria, Reschny played the 2022-2023 season with the Saskatoon Blazers where he would ultimately graduate to the Royals the next season.

Reschny was in attendance for the draft on Saturday in Los Angeles. After being picked Reschny did the rounds of media, including this interview below with Sportsnet talking about his family's commitment to help get him to this point.
