Steinbach city officials have clarified their decision to proceed with the Canada Day fireworks display during a stormy evening.

Weather conditions closely monitored

According to city parks staff and Canfire Pyrotechnics—the company responsible for fireworks displays since 2022—satellite weather maps were monitored throughout Canada Day. Officials noted that the storm passing through Steinbach appeared on the maps only later in the evening.

"The decision to proceed was based on weather conditions observed at the park," said city officials.

Rain prompted shelter advisory

Before the fireworks started, heavier rain occurred at the park, prompting organizers to use the loudspeaker system to advise attendees to seek shelter.

Once the rainfall ceased and satellite imagery confirmed the storm had passed, technicians deemed conditions safe enough to begin the fireworks display, reported Adam Thiessen with the City of Steinbach. He added that fireworks technicians continually assessed safety conditions throughout the event.

Lightning not considered safety threat

Officials confirmed that although lightning was visible during the display, it was not considered close enough to pose a safety risk. Technicians on-site also reported no thunder during the fireworks.

"There have been no reported incidents of injury to person or property related to the event," Thiessen noted.

The city intends to conduct an internal review of the event to enhance safety measures and decision-making processes for future events.
