With temperatures climbing and bugs starting to bite, it’s the perfect time to round up the best ways to keep those pesky mosquitoes at bay.

Mosquito Coils
Anyone who’s spent time outdoors has probably used one of these at some point. That familiar, slightly sweet smell comes from the slow-burning coil, which releases mosquito-repelling smoke. The active ingredient is usually a pyrethroid insecticide like allethrin, or a natural substance such as citronella. As it burns, it creates a smoky barrier that repels—or even kills—mosquitoes.

Mosquito Dunks
These go after the problem at its source: mosquito larvae. Just drop a dunk into any standing water, and it gets to work. The active ingredient is a bacterium (usually Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) that targets and kills mosquito larvae without harming other wildlife. It’s a smart way to cut off a mosquito swarm before it even starts.

Citronella Everything
The scent of summer—and for good reason. Citronella is a go-to for many people not just because it smells pleasant, but because it’s genuinely effective at repelling mosquitoes. Its strong aroma masks the smells that attract mosquitoes, acting like an invisibility cloak to keep them off your trail.
