The Woodhaven scooter gang, SOS.

A scooter gang has taken over the streets of Steinbach, but don’t worry, it is all in good fun.

A group of men from Woodhaven Manor have been cruising around town together, usually in search of their next coffee stop.

“Last year, they decided to all get together and make this a big deal, and they went around town, all the scooter guys, they went for coffee,” says Alison Reimer from Woodhaven.

Reimer says the community has embraced the group.

“Everybody was taking pictures. We thought this is so cool. They actually have their little gang. We kind of always joked about it, right, ‘the Woodhaven Gang’. So we just kept saying we should make a decal, like that's kind of cool.”

To make it official, Reimer contacted her friend Gary Blatz, a graphic designer, who helped create a logo for the group.

Helen Hutt, Tenant Resource Coordinator, says the group is now called ‘SOS,’ short for Seniors on Scooters.

“We had a prototype made-up and then we brought it in, and we called all of them into our office for a surprise meeting. And we're like, this is what we've had design for you. And they loved it. And they all ordered multiple for their scooters.”

The group can continue to be seen around town.

“They have a group chat on WhatsApp, so they coordinate with each other when they're going to go for a ride. Then they go down the road and it’s adorable.”

Other than scooter gangs, there is always something fun happening around Woodhaven.

“Essentially my job is recreation and resources for the seniors in the building. So, I get to plan some things and hang out with seniors. The best job in the world,” says Hutt.

The seniors have activities scheduled twice a day from Monday to Friday.

“We go bowling. We're going mini golfing in July. We do banana splits. We do pie and coffee afternoons. We play backyard games. We watch movies. I do exercise with them. I've done a block party. We do all the fun things!”

Hutt says the activities are a big hit with residents.

“They're really engaged. They love coming. They're a real community here, so they love doing things together. The biggest events where you get the most turnout is anytime there's just food and visiting. That's what they show up for.”
