Families and friends gathered to see the Carillon Sultans play their last home game in A.D Penner Park before prepping for provincials.
Kevin Plett is the president of Landmark Baseball, but he says he enjoys coming to watch the Sultans as a fan and a dad.
“We also all usually bring a lot of family along. We all sit here together. It's a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon for a double-header so the junior team is really fun to enjoy that way.”
Plett says that the bond between the players is strong in this age group.
“They've all been playing together for lots of years and I think they're a group that really enjoys being together and seeing each other. And I think it's a draw for them to come back every year just to play with each other.”
Plett notes that it has been fun to watch the players push each other to become better.
“The first year was definitely nervous and he had a lot of success, and it was good to see him flourish with this group of kids and these are guys that he's grown up playing with or against. All growing up and so to see them come together and be teammates is fun.”
Although players often leave for college, many return for the season each year.
“They've grown or they've honed a lot of their skills just from being gone and playing so much and getting so much repetition and getting good coaching and stuff like that. And so, to see them come back and be better than they were the year before, it's fun to see their development.”
Watching the sport is not only for baseball fans but also for supporting families.
“It's a great night to be a great way to spend the summer at the ball diamonds. It's a good, fun influence for the kids and a good, healthy place for families to spend time.”
