Shoot to Inspire brings young women from the community to basketball
Categories

Summer brings a lot more than fairs and festivals; it also brings camps and new experiences.

President and founder of Shoot to Inspire, Peyton Kehler, says that this local basketball camp is designed to bring together the women of our community.

The camp started as a passion project for Kehler and has continued to grow.

“It started my senior year of high school. I was challenged in one of my classes to take action and make a difference in my community. So as a basketball player, I always love to see more basketball in the community and more basketball for females especially.”

The community support for Shoot to Inspire means a lot to Kehler and knowing that people believed in her and the project was inspirational.

“My heart's overwhelmed from my friends that are willing to come in and give me a couple hours of their time to volunteer before work or the community members that are willing to give me some of their hard-earned dollars to make a difference in our community.”

Kehler says that she is passionate about this group and believes they will go far.

“This is our most electric bunch, they're just here to have a good time. And from day one, they're willing to make mistakes and just improve.”

This week’s camp brought four women from the front office of the Winnipeg Seabears to be speakers and inspire the group.

“They're coming from such a big organization. They want to get back to the lowest level of basketball and start them young and show them what a career can look like in sport.”

Kehler was grateful to introduce the camp members to role models

“Like my coach, Ayesha said, to see her is to be her. So, the more you could see the woman that you inspired to be like the better.”

Shoot to Inspire will be holding another camp this summer, and registration is still open.
