Intense thunderstorms rolled through Southern Manitoba Thursday night.

Rose Carlsen is a meteorologist with Environment Canada. She says our hot and humid day resulted in some unstable conditions in the environment.

The mercury Friday afternoon climbed above 30 degrees in many parts, but with the high humidity, the humidex was close to 40.

"Then we had a cold front sweeping through in the afternoon and evening, sparking off a bunch of thunderstorms as it moved through," says Carlsen.

Environment Canada issued tornado warnings in the early evening for parts of western Manitoba. Much of Southern Manitoba was under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch.

"We didn't receive any reports of any touchdowns associated with that Tornado Warning," says Carlsen. "We did get a report of ping pong-sized hail out of Nelon, Manitoba yesterday."

There was also Toonie-sized hail in Rosenort.

Manitoba Agriculture is reporting the following rain amounts from the last 24 hours:

  • Lac du Bonnet - 16.8 millimetres (mm)
  • Menisino - 11.4 mm
  • Richer - 10.2 mm
  • Elma - 7.8 mm
  • Steinbach - 7.6 mm
  • St. Adolphe - 3.5 mm
  • Beausejour - 2.0 mm
  • Marchand - 1.4 mm
  • Dominion City - 0.9 mm
  • St. Labre - 0.7 mm
  • Richer - 0.5 mm
  • Gardenton - 0.3 mm
  • Vivian - 0.3 mm
  • Dugald - 0.1 mm

"We're looking at a 60 per cent chance of showers today with a chance for thunderstorms, but nothing severe," says Carlsen. "Just like your garden variety thunderstorm may occur."

Meanwhile, Environment Canada has issued an Air Quality Warning for southeastern Manitoba. Smoke is causing or expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility.
