Current wildfire smoke should leave the area just as fast as it came in, but in the meantime, air quality around West Central is some of the worst in the province.

That's according to Crawford Luke, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, who talked about the return of the smoke over the weekend on the other side of the province.

"We are still dealing with these fires burning in the northern part of the province, unfortunately," said Luke.

While skies remained clear around west-central Saskatchewan, Luke did say that things haven't exactly been progressing to well in the north.

The smoke situation that took over parts of the province on the weekend can be directly attributed to wind.

"Last Friday, for example, the winds were still kind of in a northwesterly direction. Basically, it was bringing the smoke into the south central, southeastern parts of the province," said Luke, the smoke hanging heavy enough around Regina to postpone the Roughriders game to Saturday.

Those winds have flipped to start the week, now coming out of the northeast.

"Unfortunately for Kindersley and area, that means the smoke has made its way over there now."

The smoke skyrocketed the Air Quality Health Index for the region to by far the worst in Saskatchewan. The nearest station of reference in Saskatoon has a risk of 9-10, or very high.

"It's basically showing that some of the worst air quality is in West Central right now," said Luke, putting us second behind the north. "That's kind of the story of how the smoke came to be... Unfortunately, you have that title of some of the worst air quality for the time being."

While one look at the forecast shows a vast improvement into Wednesday, Luke isn't quite sure when the smoke will officially exit the picture.

"It looks like by the time we get to Wednesday evening things should be better in the area... As the (high pressure) slides southeast tonight and into tomorrow it's going to switch those winds around to be out of the south, so that will be really helpful to clear the smoke out of the way and blow it northwards."

Warmer weather will be on the way too once the smoke clears. Some cloud cover could interrupt things Thursday, but it's looking seasonal highs of around 25 into Friday, where some rain clouds could develop to make for a rainy weekend around West Central.
