Back-to-school safety: CAA calls for shared responsibility on roads
CAA is sharing tips on how to keep school zones free of congestion while maintaining students' safety as they return to classes this week.
"According to a recent study that we conducted, what we learned from mostly parents or guardians, is that 90 per cent of us have witnessed unsafe driving behaviours around school zones," says Ewald Friesen, the Manager of Government and Community Relations with CAA Manitoba. "This has included speeding, distracted driving, and also parking in a school bus area."
2024 street census concludes homelessness at record high in Winnipeg
According to End Homelessness Winnipeg, after taking a street census of the city in 2024, homelessness is at its highest numbers since 2015.
"[The census] is intended to help us count how many people in Winnipeg experience homelessness in a day," says Elijah Osei-Yeboah, the Manager of Evaluation and Shared Measurements with End Homelessness Winnipeg. "It also helps us know what their experiences are and how best to meet their housing needs."
According to the report, the Indigenous population is vastly overrepresented.
Providence University starts school year with bang, centennial celebrations this weekend
Providence University College and Theological Seminary have an entire weekend of events planned to celebrate 100 years of higher Christian education.
"This is going to be a school year like no other for us," says Ron Hogue, Vice President of Advancement at Providence. "It's our centennial year this year. Fred Fox reconnects with Manitoba roots while carrying Terry’s torch
Fred Fox, the older brother of Canadian icon Terry Fox, is continuing to share the impact on cancer patients 45 years after he passed.
"My dad was born and raised here [Winnipeg], Terry and I, our siblings were born here," says Fred Fox, Terry's older brother. "My mom was born in Boissevain. We moved west in the 60s, but it's always nice to come back to our home province."
Terry is a Canadian icon and hero for many across the country. However, especially before he got cancer, Fred shares how life was normal.
Grotto Theater Ministries invites community to outdoor play in St. Malo
A theatre group in southern Manitoba is inviting the public to partake and enjoy their upcoming play called 'Our Lady's Legacy.'
"Grotto Theater Ministries is a beautiful Christian theater group," says founder Miranda Hutlet. "We are all run entirely by volunteers and we're based in the beautiful grotto of St. Malo."
Hutlet started the ministry in 2023. Previously, she had written and directed Passion Plays since she was 17.
Tyler J. Ashton cycling across Canada on 'a budget of oatmeal and generosity'
Riding back through Winnipeg on his way back across Canada, a cyclist from B.C. stopped at the CHVN studios on Friday with an update.
"I did, I cycled across Canada in three months," says Tyler J. Ashton from Port Coquitlam, B.C. "I have an auto immune disease called A.S. or Ankylosing Spondylitis. More people have it than M.S., ALS, or R.A. combined. That's over half a million Canadians."
After near-death experience, lead singer of Collect Assembly on mission to share Jesus
A country rock Christian band from Saskatchewan with family ties has turned their miracle story into a means of sharing the gospel through song.
"Me and my wife got married very young," says Joel Ivey, the co-lead singer and guitarist of Collect Assembly. "I was 20 and she was 18. I knew Morgan, her little sister, since she was very young. The calling to do music together was there."
Collect Assembly was created by Ivey and his sister-in-law, Morgan Groenewald. Their latest single, "Echo," was written during an Easter family gathering, according to Ivey.
Animated film ‘Light of the World’ brings life of Jesus to big screen
A brand-new animated film called Light of the World is set to hit theatres this fall and move hearts, depicting the life of Jesus.
"It's a reimaging of telling the life story of Jesus through the eyes of a young disciple, John," says John Schafer, the director of Light of the World. "It's a fresh take on it. We made this movie for everyone, but we wrote it mind for people who may not have a concept of Jesus or the Bible."
World Humanitarian Day honours courage and sacrifice of aid workers
August 19 is World Humanitarian Day, and according to Canadian Foodgrains Bank, it's the most dangerous time ever for aid workers.
"World Humanitarian Day has been commemorated for about 20 years now," says Stefan Epp-Koop, the Senior Manager of Humanitarian Programming with Canadian Foodgrains Bank. "It's a day to do a couple of things. One is to remember people who have been killed or injured while doing humanitarian work. It's also to remember people who, every day, provide that lifesaving support for others, often at great risk to themselves."
