During National Drowning Prevention Week, the Lifesaving Society Manitoba is encouraging people to stay safe when out on the water this summer.
"On average in a year, there are between 22 and 25 fatal drownings in Manitoba," says Lynne Stefanchuk, the Executive Director at the Lifesaving Society Manitoba. "It's a statistic we would love to see come down in coming years."
July 21-25 is National Drowning Prevention Week.
"Everyone loves to be on the water in the summertime, whether that's in a pool or a lake. If there is a fatal drowning, 100 per cent of the time, they are not wearing a life jacket. It's a preventable thing if you take steps to be safe."
The theme for 2025 is 'Safer Together.'
"We are looking at ways to buddy up," says Stefanchuk. "Swim with a buddy, boat with a buddy, and make sure you're not by yourself on the water. When it comes to the little ones, make sure they're within arm's reach, their arm's reach."
Stefanchuck also encourages people who are going out on the water to tell someone else what area they are going to and when they expect to be back. Also, always wear a life jacket when doing any water sports or boating.
