Joe and Jack Anderson, two brothers with the U18 Strathmore Reds baseball team, are gearing up for a provincial tournament hosted in town.

The tournament takes place at the Kinsmen Park ball diamond from Friday (July 25) to Sunday, and will feature six teams from across the area.

The Andersons say they've been playing alongside the Reds for several years.

"I've had a group of eight or nine guys that I've played with the entire time, and it's nice to have that," said Joe. "It's like having a core team for the whole time you're playing."

The team is expected to play several games during the tournament, with Jack looking forward to taking on the Calgary Cardinals.

"That's a program that takes Strathmore kids," added Jack. "We're playing a few guys that we know, and we're excited."

The U18 Strathmore Reds will be playing at the following times:

  • Friday - 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
  • Saturday - 9 a.m., 12 p.m., 3 p.m., and 6 p.m.
  • Sunday - 9 a.m., 12 p.m., 3 p.m., and 6 p.m.

Another part of the game that the brothers love are the individual battles that arise in an inning. According to the brothers, there are a lot of moments that come down between two athletes.

"If you're pitching, it's you versus the batter. If you're playing in the infield, it's you versus the guy running. It's individual, but it's still very much a team sport," added Jack.

The boys have been helping to put together the diamond before the tournament, making sure to work around the recent rainfall.

"That's another thing about having a team, you have a bunch of guys who will go there and put the work in, even to just fix up the diamond," said Jack.

The tournament is free to attend, with all residents invited to make it out and support local sports.
