Estevan’s business community experienced a notable economic boost over the weekend, thanks to a series of major events that drew hundreds of visitors to the city.
With provincial softball and baseball championships, the Estevan Golden Eels swim semi-finals, a street dance and racing events all taking place, hotels, restaurants and retail shops were buzzing with activity.
“First and foremost, when you have people coming into town for these kinds of events, they’re staying in our hotels, which is an immediate economic spinoff,” said Merissa Scarlett, executive director of the Estevan Chamber of Commerce. “From there, they’re eating at our restaurants, shopping and exploring the community while they're here.”
Scarlett said the hospitality and retail sectors saw the biggest impact over the weekend.
“Busy weekends such as these are incredibly important to the overall health of our business community,” she said. “They help keep people employed, support local business owners and really showcase Estevan as a great place to live and visit.”
She added that local businesses can make the most of these weekends by reaching out to event organizers in advance to offer special deals, coupons or promotions.
“There was a great example during one of the dance weekends where a restaurant put together a buffet for families. It was quick, easy and really appreciated by the visitors,” said Scarlett. “Businesses can really think outside the box and find ways to connect with the people coming to town.”
She said the chamber is always excited to welcome more events and tournaments, knowing the positive ripple effect they have throughout the local economy.
