It was a soggy morning in Southern Manitoba and Environment Canada says more rain is on the way.
Meteorologist Crawford Luke says Tuesday's rain event follows what was an active night for severe weather. On Monday evening, Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for parts of Southern Manitoba, including the Rural Municipality (RM) of Macdonald and the RM of Morris.
"We're not aware of any tornado touchdowns at this point in time," says Luke. "We do have one report of a funnel cloud which was actually spotted by the weather observer at the Winnipeg Airport."
Many parts of the province received rain Monday evening. Luke says rainfall totals varied, but notes that some areas battling wildfires definitely got wet.
Then, Tuesday morning, heavy rain moved through the region again. Manitoba Agriculture is reporting that as of 11 am, Steinbach received 38.6 millimetres (mm), more than any other location in southeastern Manitoba.
"Then later today we have the chance for possibly some thunderstorms, and another round of rain, kind of later this afternoon into the evening, and into the night," reports Luke.
But Luke says it appears that most of the severe weather on Tuesday will stay south of the border.
"It looks like it's going to be more of a Minnesota problem than a Manitoba problem," he suggests. "But we should still get some rain out of it. So, we could get another five millimetres later on today."
However, he notes for areas with thunderstorms, there could be pockets that receive up to 30 mm of rain.
"Certainly, the southeast corner of the province looks to be getting the most rain today and just sort of along the southern border with the United States," he says. "But it does look like some of these wildfire areas might get into some of the rain today as well, which would also be nice."
Luke adds he does not expect a repeat of Monday with tornado warnings in Manitoba on Tuesday. However, he says it is quite possible that either a warning or a statement will be issued on Tuesday regarding the air quality in Southern Manitoba.
"Expecting the smoke to get really bad again tonight and into Wednesday, unfortunately," says Luke, noting the smoke will likely stick around for a few more days.
He explains that there is high pressure that is sliding from west to east across the Prairies. Once that gets to the east of us, Luke says it will produce a south wind, which will blow the smoke out of the region. Luke says this is expected Friday morning.
As for the forecast for the rest of this week, Luke says the air should start to warm up again as we get closer to the weekend. He anticipates there could be a chance of thunderstorms Friday night.
