The Enbridge Tour Alberta for Cancer made a stop in Strathmore over the weekend.
On Saturday (July 19) and Sunday, hundreds of riders from across the country raced around town before meeting back at the Strathmore Ag Grounds. The race led to lane closures on Brent Boulevard and Wheatland Trail.
Many of the racers have a personal connection to cancer. One rider, Richard Webb, is a cancer survivor himself.
"I've been cycling for around 25 years, but I've been cycling a lot more in the last 20 years," said Webb, who first started racing in the Tour Alberta for Cancer 10 years ago after receiving his diagnosis.
"At the time, it was really difficult to handle," said Webb. "I didn't have to have any chemo, so it took a couple of years, but I've been really fortunate with how things turned out for me."
A total of $9,492,890 was raised through the event, surpassing the fundraising goal of $9,000,000.
"I've always liked to do stuff like this, and to give back to cancer research was a big motivator for me," added Webb, claiming that he raised most of his funds through the generosity of his coworkers.
