Rosella Agnes Schroeder nee Braun (1943-2025)
Rosella Schroeder died at Almonte General Hospital (Ontario) on July 17, 2025, after a lengthy illness. She is survived by her husband Herman; her brother Ronald “Joe” Braun of Altona, Manitoba and his wife Lois (Nickel); her sister Viola of Vegreville, Alberta and her husband Derek Fox; her sisters-in-law Marlene Epp Braun and Marianne Kaethler Braun, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her daughter Lori (1966-2021); and her brothers Albert Braun (1937-2000) and Kenneth Braun (1942-2022).
Born at Altona, Manitoba on January 30, 1943, to Aganetha “Nettie” Petrovna Dyck (1906-1991) and Gerhard “George” Abram Braun (1908-1999), she was raised on a farm in the Kleinstadt community near Altona. After high school at Altona Collegiate and Mennonite Collegiate Institute, she took teacher training at Normal School in Winnipeg, then taught in Northern Manitoba for two years. After marrying Herman Peter Schroeder of Kronsweide (Lowe Farm area), they both taught at Nelson House for a year. Back in Winnipeg, Rosella taught Special Education while he worked for International Business Machines (IBM). They then relocated with her daughter Lori Denise to Ottawa and obtained jobs in the civil service, eventually making their home on a rural property near Almonte, Ontario.
In retirement, Rosella and Herman moved to Almonte, where she served as a volunteer for the Almonte Textile Museum and the local library, met with a group of friends for weekly coffee, devoured many books of fiction, and tended to her flowers. Throughout her life, until illness took its toll, she and Herman made frequent trips to see family in Manitoba and revisit their farm roots, and also occasionally visited Lori in Whitehorse, Yukon, and Rosella’s sister Viola’s family in Alberta.
At Rosella’s request, there will be no funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Almonte General Hospital-Fairview Manor Foundation.
Arrangements by C. R. Gamble Funeral Home & Chapel, Almonte, Ontario.
