Woodridge is celebrating its 125th anniversary this weekend, bringing hard work and years of history together in one big celebration.
The community of Woodridge had been working hard on this celebration for 7 months. Cory Jackson with the Woodridge Community Club says that this event is so successful because of the community volunteers.
“We take great pride. We call ourselves a candid community. And again, everything that we do in the way of an event or a fundraiser is always on the backs of volunteers. And we're really lucky. We have, as always, a small army of volunteers who've stepped up to help with today's event.”
Jackson says the spirit of volunteerism is alive and well in their community.
“Time again, when we talk about Woodridge and its history, that's something that again is sort of etched in our DNA, right? We're always about generosity, goodwill, community spirit, and community pride.” Says Jackson.
She is hopeful that the hard work put into this event and the culture of the community will be an example for the future of Woodridge.
“We hope to, as part of today's celebration, also leave a little bit of a legacy for those future generations, just to know that this is part of the Woodridge tradition.”
The events began with a heritage parade. Followed by opening ceremonies, ice cream and hot dogs, dance parties, and historical exhibits. Activities will continue through Saturday and into Sunday.
Jackson also looks forward to the next group of volunteers opening their time capsule and monument at the 150th anniversary. She says that she hopes they are also eager to celebrate.
While the community looks forward to the future, they are excited about the present and hosting one of their biggest celebrations yet.
“We're happy that it's here, and we get to celebrate the hard work of our volunteers. And like I say, just to bring community together. Building community is about community, and that's our mantra.”
After a difficult season due to wildfires, community spirit in Woodridge is as strong as ever.
Jackson says that it is always nice to have events that bring light to the community.
She continues by saying the Woodridge community is a testament to persevering through hard times, noting the importance of community support.
“So, you just, you know, do the best you can. And again, just count on your neighbors and your family and friends to sort of support you through.”
