Hot weather and large crowds helped make Altona's 60th annual Manitoba Sunflower Festival this past weekend a huge success.

"It's been a great weekend," said Sandra Klassen, chair of the planning committee.

A new start

Celebrations kicked off a day earlier than usual on Thursday evening with a free community BBQ.

"It was a great idea! We served almost a thousand people," noted Klassen. "I think that whole kick-off idea was a great idea."

The evening also included a double-feature movie night in the park, sponsored by Sun Valley Co-op. Members of Altona/Rhineland Emergency Services also hosted a family fun night, allowing people of all ages to try out some of the department's equipment with fun games.

A homecoming weekend

The festival also acted as a reunion for many former residents, returning to Altona for the festivities.

"I was kind of watching the crowds and people walking about and saying, 'oh it's good to see you!'," said Klassen. "That is exactly what we want - people getting back together and celebrating."

In fact, W.C. Miller Collegiate's graduating class of 2000 and 2005 hosted their 25th and 20th reunions, respective, over the weekend.

Queen Quest: A Dream Realized

The weekend also featured the annual Queen Quest crowning on Saturday evening.

For contestant, Sarea Bohn-Hildebrand, sponsored by Golden West, it was a childhood dream come true.

"The fashion show has always been a favourite of mine, ever since I was little, so being a part of it this year is amazing."

While she didn't walk away with the crown, Bohn-Hildebrand said it was exciting to see all of their hard work come together, having worked towards the moment since January.

Eyes on 2030: Planning the 65th

Meantime, Klassen says the committee already has its sights set on the 65th festival coming up in 2030.

"We're going to try our best to make it a big bash," she noted.

Planning hasn't begun yet, but Klassen says the committee will be hosting a few fund raisers to help raise some cash for the big celebration.

"Watch for fund raisers coming up. We just love the support our community gives us every year."

"If there is something that someone wants to see at the 65th, something you saw 65 years ago, or 50 or 40, let the Manitoba Sunflower Festival committee know and we will take that feedback very seriously."
