The U13 AA Carillon Sultans Grey team had an exciting and entertaining weekend to say the least, and coach Colin Tétrault provided the update from the weekend.
"Being ranked 4th in their pool, they took on 3rd ranked MacDonald Yankees in the 1st game," explained Tétrault . "After overcoming an early deficit, the Sultans took a 3 run lead in the last inning but ended up losing in extra innings after a few controversial calls. It was a very disappointing loss which significantly reduced their chances at finishing in the top 2 teams in their pool to make it into the semis."
They then faced 1st ranked South Central Cubs in an evening game being a huge underdog. "It was an exciting nail biting game," Tétrault says with a smile. "We were able to walk it off in the bottom of the 7th inning for a 13-12 win giving them a huge momentum boost which carried over into Saturday."
The Sultans won both games 11-1 that day in a 5 inning mercy against 5th ranked Oildome and 2nd rank Bonivital Red Sox.
Those wins put the Sultans at a 3-1 record and winning their pool and putting them in the semis against the Portage Phillies.
After giving up 5 runs in the 1st inning, the Sultans were able to fight back and make it 6-3 in the fourth inning before a 3 hour rain delay. However, the Sultans couldn’t find a way to get more runs and the Phillies blew it open in the 7th inning (last inning is open) with 10 runs which made it a 17-3 final.
Although it was a disappointing result in the semi final, the Carillon Grey team accomplished their goal of making it to the semi finals and winning their pool despite being ranked 4th.
"It has been an incredible year of growth, team bonding and friendship for the Carillon Grey team," Tétrault states proudly. "It will certainly be one that will not be forgotten."
