A local organization is rolling up to the annual Pioneer Days parade in a big way.

A helping hand

South East Helping Hands (SEHH) is an independently run food bank, operating for over 40 years in Steinbach.

With this year’s Pioneer Days parade approaching quickly, the organization wanted to bring grocery shopping to the streets.

SEHH will be wheeling down Main Street with shopping carts, accepting food and charitable donations.

Ken Dyck, operations manager at SEHH, says his team is ready to roll.

“We've got the carts done... We're ready to collect food, money, and anything else you want to give us.”

He encourages the community to bring non-perishable food items to the parade.

“Make sure you bring your tin for a bin because. People tend to forget. They have (food) sitting at home, ready to go. Put a bow on it, put it in your car," he says.

When deciding what items to bring along. Dyck says think about what you would put in your own grocery cart.

He says items like cereal, cake mixes, cookies, oatmeal and Alphagetti are big staples. Hygiene products also are welcomed.

“You really can't go too wrong with bringing something, if your own family eats (or uses) it, the helping hands’ families need it.”

Additionally, SEHH will be accepting cash, cheque and card donations.

More to come

SEHH has more planned for this summer season.

The nonprofit is hosting their first annual golf tournament on August 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Quarry Oaks Golf Course.

Dyck says there will be prizes to give away, and spots are still available to sign up. Buy tickets and register on the SEHH website, or give them a call at 204-326-2599.
