With the Heritage Day long weekend approaching, Alberta RCMP is reminding drivers to prioritize safety on the roads.
Officials emphasize key precautions for motorists over the busy weekend:
-
Don’t drive impaired: Alcohol and drugs reduce judgment and reaction time. Arrange a safe ride home.
-
Avoid distractions: Beyond phones, activities like grooming, adjusting devices, or attending to passengers can be dangerous.
-
Drive for conditions: Speed limits are for ideal conditions. Adjust speed for weather, traffic, and road surfaces.
-
Buckle up: Ensure all passengers are properly restrained.
-
Watch for others: More bikes, pedestrians, and off-highway vehicles share the roads in summer—check blind spots carefully.
-
Communicate plans: Let family or friends know your route and expected arrival time.
“Many collisions are preventable,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic. “Leaving early, staying alert, and adjusting to conditions can help keep Alberta’s roads safe this long weekend.”
