From January 1 to July 15, 2025, the Saskatchewan RCMP reported 13 homicide files involving 13 victims, a notable decline from the 23 homicides reported in the same period last year, according to data released Friday. Of the 13 homicides this year, nine cases have been solved while four remain under investigation.
The year 2024 marked the highest number of homicide files ever recorded by Saskatchewan RCMP jurisdiction, with 39 homicide files and 41 victims — a 26 per cent increase in files and 32 per cent increase in victims compared to 2023. It also represented the second-highest number of homicide victims on record in the province.
Annual homicide statistics reported by Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Branch show:
-
2020: 31 files, 32 victims
-
2021: 31 files, 35 victims
-
2022: 33 files, 43 victims (including all mass casualty victims)
-
2023: 31 files, 31 victims
-
2024: 39 files, 41 victims
-
2025 (to July 15): 13 files, 13 victims
The Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Branch also assisted File Hills First Nations Police Service with investigating two homicides involving five victims this year, both of which have been solved.
It is important to note that homicide investigations can be reclassified over time if evidence changes, and cases where the accused is deemed non-culpable or classified as suspicious deaths (unless confirmed as homicides) are not included in these totals.
The clearance rate for homicide files investigated by Saskatchewan RCMP since 2015 is 85 per cent, exceeding the national average clearance rate of 72 per cent reported by Canadian police services between 2020 and 2024.
“In cases that remain unsolved, our investigators continue to work diligently, often revisiting files with new techniques and perspectives to uncover leads,” said Insp. Ashley St. Germaine, Senior Investigative Officer with Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Branch. “We are committed to justice for victims and answers for their families.”
