A youth and an adult from the Municipality of Rhineland are due in court after a traffic stop in Plum Coulee became so much more on Sunday.

It all started when officers on patrol witnessed a near-collision, explained Altona Police Chief Dan Defer.

"They observed a truck come off Highway Avenue onto Highway 306 and it cut off a cyclist. The cyclist then almost turned into the police vehicle to avoid a collision with the truck, so a traffic stop was conducted."

Defer went on to say that during the stop, officers spotted and seized two unlocked and unsecured firearms in the vehicle, both within reaching distance of the driver and the passenger. However, the situation just snowballed from there.

"The driver was a 16-year-old who had a Learner's Permit. The passenger (a 23-year-old) was the supervising driver. However, there was open liquor in the vehicle and the passenger, the supervising driver, blew a warning on the roadside screening device which, you can't be a supervising driver then," outlined Defer.

Additionally, neither the youth or the adult had a firearms license and were not legally allowed to possess the firearms.

Both individuals have been charged with possession of the firearms. Provincial offence notices were also issued in relation to the liquor related offences.

The duo will appear in court at a later date.
