Five adults were rescued Saturday after becoming stranded in the Pinawa float channel when swift water overpowered their inflatable devices.

According to a news release from the Pinawa Fire & Rescue Service, crews were called to the scene on August 9, along with RCMP and EMS, after reports of people in distress.

Fire crews found five "unprepared" people who were unable to reach the shore. The fire department says that none of the people were wearing life jackets or carrying paddles.

To make matters worse, none of them knew how to swim.

Using equipment from Pinawa Unplugged, firefighters were able to reach the group and guide them to safety.

“Swift water can be dangerous, even in areas where people commonly float,” the release stated, noting that all five individuals were unharmed.

Officials are reminding residents and visitors to wear life jackets and be prepared when taking part in water activities.
